Claudia Sheinbaum Dismisses Civil War in Chiapas

President Claudia Sheinbaum ruled out the possibility of a civil war in Chiapas this morning, despite the wave of violence and forced displacements affecting the state. In response to a direct question on the matter, she stated categorically: 'no, no, I don’t think so.'

Sheinbaum emphasized that it is crucial to work to prevent displacements, pacify the area, and avoid extortions and crimes in the state, based on the available information. She also mentioned that they are collaborating with the outgoing governor of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandón, and the incoming one, Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar, to prevent events like the murder of Father Marcelo Pérez Pérez last Sunday, October 20, from happening again.

Regarding the homicide of the Catholic priest, the president informed that the Attorney General's Office is already in charge of investigating the case. Marcelo Pérez was shot dead when he was leaving a mass in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

In the days prior, the priest had received death threats and defamations, even having an arrest warrant against him due to his work as a mediator in the conflict between an armed group and a group of self-defense forces in Pantelhó, where violence erupted in July 2021 and spread to other areas of Chiapas.
